ILSR Releases Local Composting Toolkit

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) launched the Local Composting Toolkit during Earth Week 2026. It’s a free online resource for anyone working to advance composting in their community, designed for home composters, farmers, local government officials, policymakers, and advocates alike.

The toolkit is organized around five goals: learning to compost, exploring the benefits of local composting, advocating for and changing policy, implementing and operating programs, and educating and engaging your community. Each section connects users to guides, reports, fact sheets, and other resources developed primarily by ILSR’s Composting for Community Initiative, along with materials from partner organizations. The toolkit is also available in Spanish.

ILSR frames local composting as more than good materials management. When communities manage their own organic materials, they build food sovereignty, create local jobs, improve soil health, reduce pollution, and strengthen social connections.

The toolkit is available at ilsr.org/composting/local-composting-toolkit. For more information, contact Brenda Platt, Director of ILSR’s Composting for Community Initiative, through the ILSR team page.
